WTF Sets Sights High In 2020

Raleigh, NC (November 25, 2019) – Since its inception, WTF has been a part of the international call for equity in theatre and film known as the 50/50 By 2020 Movement. This company and its mission to create, produce, and promote extraordinary theatre by women+ has never been more relevant as it is right now. WTF invites everyone to join the movement and to be a part of the ripple effect of achieving gender parity on and off stage in the Triangle.

The time is now: Follow the Living Our Mission in 2020 campaign to be inspired by the impact made by WTF and participating artists in 2019 as well as the ways WTF will create, produce,  promote, and partner in 2020.

To Create: WTF has commissioned its first work for 2020. The play titled XIX is being written by Jacqueline E. Lawton (Dramatists Guild, Playmakers Rep, Kilroys) in celebration and reckoning with the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. XIX is a socio-political drama following a multi-racial family who find themselves in the middle of the fight for equality and divided over the right to vote. XIX will receive a public sharing through the UNC Process Series on February 27-28 2020, followed by a staged reading at WTF 2020 in July and the World Premiere production in October 2020. Be a part of the year-long process bringing this important work to the stage!

To Produce: WTF will finish out the 2019-2020 Women Are Wicked season with Freakshow by Carson Kreitzer from May 29-June 7 2020 at the new Pure Life Theatre. Directed by Rowen Haigh, who directed Thunderbodies in WTF’s first season, Freakshow follows the story of Amalia, The Woman With No Arms And No Legs, the star attraction of a turn of the past century side show.

To Promote: WTF amplifies the contributions of women+ in theatre through their annual summer Festival. This year’s Women’s Theatre Festival will take place in Raleigh from July 8-12 2020 and will feature multi-track programming through WTFringe, WTF Con, and WTF Family series. This convening has it all–world class performances, experimental new work, round tables, workshops, trainings, networking and mentorship opportunities, and child care–all under one roof in Raleigh’s historic Royal Bakery Building! WTF will begin accepting submissions in January and tickets will go onsale in March.

To Partner: WTF is excited to announce a year of strong partnerships in 2020 beginning with the Pure Life Theatre Collective. The members of the Collective, as envisioned by Deb Royals-Mizerk, will share resources (such as performing and office space) and provide support to one another so that everyone’s work thrives. Help celebrate and support the Pure Life Theatre Company + Collective by attending the Holiday Gala on December 7, 2019. Entertainment includes a preview of Pure Life’s upcoming production of Motown Christmas.

We’d love your help engaging our community in our incredible, equitable work in 2020. We’re also always delighted to talk more about our work. This release is followed by a detailed info sheet.
